The rehabilitation of historic buildings is much more than a construction intervention. It is an exercise in respect for architecture, urban memory, and the identity of our cities. Each facade, each material, and each construction detail tells a story that deserves to be preserved.
At TCA Sertec, we have recently completed a comprehensive intervention on the rear facade of a historic property located in the heart of the Eixample in Barcelona, a project that involved seven months of meticulous work to restore the building's original essence while ensuring its conservation and durability.
An intervention based on respect for heritage
The Eixample is one of the most representative urban ensembles of Barcelona. Its architectural value lies not only in the grand facades that shape the city's streets but also in the construction elements that are part of its historical and cultural identity.
Aware of this responsibility, the intervention has been developed following criteria of heritage conservation, recovering traditional techniques and materials compatible with the original construction.
The goal has been to preserve the architectural character of the building, maintaining its authenticity and ensuring its proper adaptation to current maintenance and conservation needs.
Recovering the original architecture
One of the most notable works of the project has been the reconstruction of the balconies of the rear facade.
The intervention has been carried out faithfully respecting the original configuration through the use of the traditional Catalan vault system, an emblematic construction technique of Catalan architecture that combines structural lightness, strength, and significant heritage value.
The recovery of these elements has allowed the building to regain an essential part of its historical image, while ensuring its safety and stability.
Traditional materials and techniques
The restoration of the walls has been carried out through the application of lime stucco, reproducing the original construction systems of the time.
The choice of this material is not solely based on aesthetic criteria. Lime has properties of breathability and compatibility with historical supports that make it a particularly suitable solution for heritage rehabilitation interventions.
In addition, a prior chromatic study was conducted to identify the original colors of the building and recover its historical image. Thanks to this analysis, it was possible to apply natural paints that respect both the aesthetics and the traditional materials of construction.
The result is a facade that regains its original personality and coherently reintegrates into the architectural landscape of the Eixample.
Rehabilitate to preserve the identity of the city
Cities constantly evolve, but their identity depends on the ability to preserve those elements that explain their history.
Heritage rehabilitation allows for extending the useful life of buildings, improving their performance, and ensuring their preservation for future generations, preventing the loss of architectural elements of great cultural value.
At TCA Sertec, we understand each rehabilitation project as an opportunity to establish a dialogue between the past and the present. Our commitment is to intervene with technical rigor, architectural sensitivity, and respect for the essence of each building.
A project that looks to the future without forgetting the past
After seven months of work, this intervention in the Eixample represents a demonstration of how rehabilitation can become a tool to preserve urban memory and reinforce the value of built heritage.
The reconstruction of the balconies using volta catalana, the recovery of lime stucco, and the chromatic study conducted have allowed for the return of part of the building's original character, keeping alive the architecture that shapes Barcelona.
Because rehabilitating is not just about restoring a building.
It is about preserving history, protecting identity, and building the future with respect for the past.
